The Daily Huddle (12/20)

I'm going to try to start this series of blogs called The Daily Huddle where I summarize some of the news in the sports that I care about. Sports is one of my passions so I'll try to cover NFL, NBA, EPL, PGA and maybe some MLB and NHL and any other sport related stuff that I might care about.

Some quick disclaimers: I am a Boston sports fan for all four major sports, I am a Manchester City fan and there are a few PGA players that I hate but I like most of them. Finally, I am only going to touch on the topics and events that I care about or that I deem important. I'm sure there will be newsworthy topics that I miss. Oh well.

I'll try to keep these organized by league or sport so you can scroll to the section that you care about.

PGA

Justin Thomas and his dad Mike won the PNC Championship today. Team Thomas shot an impressive 15 under par, 57 today which put them at 25 under par for the two day tournament. This tournament is a really neat one to watch during the off season and watching these pros with their fathers or sons or daughters or whoever they choose is always a joyful thing to watch.

Probably the leading story coming out of the PNC Championship is the fact that 11-year old Charlie Woods is INCREDIBLE at golf and not just for his age. Yeah, he gets to tee off closer than the pro players, but HE'S 11! He gave us an awesome little Tiger fist pump as he sunk a long birdie putt today and I am looking forward to seeing him take over the game of golf.

NFL

In the NFL this week, my Patriots lost to the Miami Dolphins which eliminated us from any shot of the playoffs. Yes, I say "we" and "us" referring to the Pats. Cam Newton at quarterback in New England sounds SO cool to me but then watching it play out in real life is just not what I had expected. He just can't seem to throw the ball where he needs to and that is not a good way to win games. I thought we had a chance today when the Pats took a 6 point lead early, but we couldn't get it done offensively, scoring ZERO touchdowns today. I am sort of hoping to see Jarrett Stidham get the look next week since our playoff hopes are gone.

Down in Tampa Bay, my guy Tom Brady had himself a pretty good day with 390 yards and 2 TDs for a win in a close game over the Falcons.

The New York Jets got their first win of the season! Which is terrible for them, because they now do not get the first overall pick in the next NFL draft, meaning Trevor Lawrence from Clemson will almost certainly be a Jacksonville Jaguar next year. It really seemed like the Jets were going to end the season 0-16 and keep the #1 pick but somehow they managed to mess that up.

As I'm writing this the Browns are up 13-3 late in the second quarter over the Giants. I expect the Browns to be able to close this one out without much problem.

EPL

In England, some guys played soccer. I don't pay too much attention to the EPL unless it is Manchester City, and they did not play today but they are sitting near the top of the table in 7th. Our rivals from the other side of Manchester, Man U, had a big win over Leeds United today 6-2 which upsets me because anytime Man U can lose is positive in my eyes, plus, I think Leeds is a fun team to watch and I like to see them win. Again, I'm not huge into soccer or the EPL but I do like to include it in the Huddle.

Final Thoughts

The other sports that I would write about are not in season yet, though the NBA is just days away, so obviously I won't be covering those today. The only other notable story that comes to my mind is the College Football Playoff has been set with the four teams everyone anticipated. We have #1 Alabama, #2 Clemson, #3 Ohio State and #4 Notre Dame. I expect to see Bama and Clemson in the National Title game but you never know.

See ya tomorrow for Monday Night Football talks and any other big news that may arise.
